Copenhagen: Ministers and leaders from around the world set the direction for COP30

Ministers and leaders have gathered in Copenhagen for two days to discuss solutions to the climate crisis in preparation for COP30 in Belém in November.

For two days, key climate actors from around the world have gathered for the high-level Copenhagen Climate Ministerial at Moltkes Palæ in Copenhagen, where they discussed the path toward COP30 and worked to lay the groundwork for the crucial negotiations in Brazil in November.

One of the main themes at this year’s Copenhagen Climate Ministerial has been the new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) that parties to the Paris Agreement must submit this year. The purpose of the NDCs is for each party to report what they can contribute in order to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The ministers have also focused on maintaining momentum for the global climate action and securing support for ambitious targets from political leaders, the business sector, and the international community. There is also agreement on the need for concrete action.

“This year’s high-level meeting in Copenhagen has shown that ministers and key climate actors are still committed to finding solutions together. Despite a global backdrop marked by global tensions and despite some nations stepping away from climate commitments, there is still momentum for global climate action. Over the past two days, we’ve taken important steps and engaged in crucial discussions. Now we must keep up the pressure heading towards COP30 in November,” says Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities, Lars Aagaard.

Danish minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard, chaired the meeting alongside the COP30 President-Designate, Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago from Brazil, and COP29 President, Mukhtar Babayev from Azerbaijan.

It is the fourth year in a row that Denmark has hosted the Copenhagen Climate Ministerial.
