Denmark and Germany have now signed the contract with the European Com-mission for €645 million in EU funding for the project.

Energinet and its German counterpart, 50Hertz, have signed the agreement with the European Commission to secure the allocation of €645 million in funding that the EU has granted the Bornholm Energy Island-project in the Baltic Sea. The funding comes from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and represents one of the largest amounts the European Commission has allocated to energy projects within the EU.

Lars Aagaard, Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities says:

“The project is the first of its kind to combine an electricity interconnector between two countries with offshore wind farms. At the same time, it marks an important step in the cooperation between Denmark and Germany as well as in expanding Europe’s renewable energy capacity, contributing to a secure Europe independent of Russian energy. The EU-funding is a significant economic contribution to the project. I am now looking forward to continuing the dialogue with my German counterpart in order to secure the sufficient common funding of the project.”

European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen says:

“This project is a blueprint for future offshore power development in the EU. Not only will it help integrate renewable energy and decarbonise our system. Crucially, it will boost the competitiveness of the sector while providing cleaner and cheaper energy to millions of European consumers across borders.  This is why completing the Energy Union is paramount. The Commission will keep doing its utmost to support innovative infrastructure projects that make the energy transition happen on the ground.”

Bornholm Energy Island is designed to be able to transmit 2 GW of clean electricity to Germany and 1.2 GW to Denmark from a total of 3 GW of offshore wind farms to be established off the southern coast of Bornholm. Denmark and Germany will now continue negotiations on the financing of the project.
